April is national poetry month, a time for daring souls to attempt the 30/30 challenges, or attend poetry readings. Calliope is finishing up its review process, and we are hard at work putting our lovely magazine together. To kick off the month, and celebrate our poets, we would like to start a weekly Ekphrastic Challenge!
What is an ekphrastic poem? It is a poem inspired by a piece of art, a vivid description or narration of a story perceived within. The poet may interpret or expand on the artwork as they wish, and find meaning in what is presented.
Submissions are open to students, faculty, and alumnus. Send your poem to firstname.lastname@example.org by next Friday, April 8. We will post our top poem on this blog the next day.
The image selected for the first challenge is “The Messenger” by surrealist Russian artist Boris Indrikov.
